The role:

The role of Energy Engineering Specialist is to do detailed analysis, providing advice to improve energy management activities across Seriti and to identify, progress and recommend significant value improvement opportunities. They provide engineering technical service for energy management as well as implementing and monitoring energy efficiency action plans and monitor carbon findings and implementations of strategies within the relevant operation by developing and communicating plans, policies and standards.

The Energy Engineering Specialist supports the Principal Electrical Engineer in the Seriti Business Unit (BU) transition to common Business Performance systems, processes and capabilities in the asset management and engineering areas. This will deliver a performance step change and benchmark operational and business performance across the Seriti BU.

To form a strategic partnership with Seriti’s operating Sites to identify the most favourable options to drive substantial reduction in energy and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

• Direct Responsibility to develop, oversee and drive the implementation of Energy and CO2 Management program which include Group Technical Standard 23 (Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management), energy projects and action plans for the various operations through managing contracting companies, such as Seriti’s appointed ESCO’s, in achieving energy targets and monitoring adherence to the project plan as well as managing the project
• Act as the Energy custodian for Seriti through communicating, creating awareness and educating all stakeholders on energy efficiency related matters by implementing various energy saving initiatives, communicating energy related issues, and visiting collieries for interaction
• Oversee and ensure the effective energy reporting and information collection for the operation by checking and analysing energy data in Enablon for discrepancies and assisting environmental department and operations in energy information capture and reporting
• Develop Seriti’s opportunity cost curve for energy and GHG projects
• Ensure operations’ compliance with Seriti Energy Strategy ensuring that systems are in place and maintain an energy register
• Relevant industry groups and forums participation (e.g. Energy Council of South Africa, South African Renewable Energy Council)

You will need:

• BTech / BSc in Electrical Engineering (NQF Level 7)
• Registered as a technologist or professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or be able to register within 6 months of appointment
• Safety & Risk Management courses
• Experience in Energy Management Systems (such as ISO 50 001)
• In-depth knowledge of electrical engineering
• In-depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act and Minerals and Energy Act
• Understanding of engineering best practices and new technologies relating to engineering principles & processes
• Proven experience working with Energy Efficiency Initiatives
• Demonstrated experience working in an operational environment (such as Processing or in Asset Optimisation)
• Understands technical and value chain aspects of mining and processing
• Experience dealing with third parties (e.g. contractors, consultants, etc.).
• Valid driver’s license
• In possession of or able to obtain a certificate of fitness

Advantageous:

• Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP)
• Experience in Environmental Engineering
• Management Development Programme or the equivalent
• Sound working knowledge of applicable Seriti policies, procedures and codes of practice
• Member of the South African Collieries Engineering Association
