Job Advert Summary

In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ in South Africa and the region, the Research Units of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The role of the HSRC is to conduct applied social science and humanities research for the public good in South Africa. The Deputy CEO (DCEO) provides leadership and strategic oversight of the activities of the various research divisions, centres and units and centres in the HSRC. These include the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII), Inclusive Economic Development (IED), Human & Social Capabilities (HSC), Developmental, Capable & Ethical State (DCES). The DCEO also has the direct responsibility for HSRC Publishing and the e-Research Knowledge Centre (e-RKC).

Centralised functions in the Office of the DCEO act as a coordinating platform to drive the HSRC’s research activities, support strategic planning, performance management and reporting, institutional initiatives, research grant management and a commitment to quality, ethics and excellence in all aspects of the research endeavour.

A vacancy exists for a suitable candidate to take up a new role of an Institutional Grants Support Manager in the Office of the DCEO.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) or similar; Consideration will also be given to candidates who have completed their coursework and 90% of their Masters dissertation.
  • A minimum of 10 years in grant making, proposal writing and networking;
  • Proven experience relevant to the duties as described above;
  • Strategic planning expertise, market research skills and marketing experience within a public-benefit organisation;
  • Knowledge of the donor landscape, and a successful track record in growing fund-raising capacity, preferably in a social science research environment;
  • Strong proposals and report writing skills;
  • Demonstrated networking base of funders and stakeholders;
  • The ability to function independently and under pressure;
  • High level of integrity and professionalism to liaise with top-level stakeholders and perform duties in a sensitive and confidential manner;
  • A commitment to excellence, attention to detail and meticulous and accurate execution of tasks; and
  • Must be able to work in a diverse and multi-cultural environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactively scan the funding landscape and solicit partnerships with funders;
  • Develop strong relationships with government, private sector and international donors
  • Oversee the coordination and management of all institutional wide grants i.e., NHI, NRF etc.;
  • Lead in streamlining funding opportunities in a transparent and coordinated manner within HSRC research units;
  • Manage regulatory and due diligence functions with funders;
  • Lead in brand championing the HSRC profile with external funders;
  • Solicit opportunities for profile raising of HSRC researchers;
  • Initiate networking opportunities to aid funding prospects;
  • Build in-house capacity for design, development, writing and review of concept notes and funding proposals;
  • Support the development of systems and tools for project management of funding applications and concept notes;
  • Coordinate NRF Ratings application process internally and in conjunction with the NRF;
  • Liaise between the ODCEO, Divisional Research Business Developers, Strategic Partnerships Unit and Capacity Development staff as well as research staff within the research and shared services functions;
  • Conduct diagnostic analysis of the success and failure rate of grant and funding
